2010-03-17 – Since January 2010 Nexans fully offsets the CO2 emissions generated by its employees traveling by air for business: about 60 million kilometers a year generates almost 7,000 metric tons of CO2. The focus of this policy is the Unchindile-Mapanda (Tanzania) reforestation project. It is the first reforestation project to have been certified byt the international association VCS (Voluntary Carbon Standard), which guarantees the traceability of the carbon credit units issued.
Almost 18,000 hectares of degraded land will soon be reforested with pine, eucalyptus and threatened local species to protect the biodiversity.
Ten percent of the sums collected will be devoted to the local communities.
Additionally, 200 jobs and 200 km of roads will be created. The villagers will gradually gain access to wells, schools and medical centers.
