Overtaking lead

HYPRON® lead-free cables, developed especially for the refining and petrochemical industry, offer the same protection against aggressive chemicals as lead-sheathed cables, but are much easier to handle and install due to lower weight and smaller cross-sections.

 

Triple synergy

Traditional lead offers excellent hydrocarbon-resistance qualities, but it can pose a danger to public health and the environment. As an alternative, HYPRON® cables combine aluminum tape for watertightness, HDPE for resistance to inorganic chemicals (like Chloride), and Polyamide for resistance to organic chemicals (aromatics, petrol) in an incredibly tough co-extruded triple-protective layer.


 
Versatility

The technology can be used for all refinery/petrochemical cables: energy (LV and MV), control, instrumentation and communication. They can also be customized in terms of armored protection, fire-reaction, and fire-resistance.

 

Extrusion: the glue to success

HYPRON® took five years to perfect. It grew out of Nexans’ commitment to Sustainable Development and Life Cycle Assessment where we study the full environmental impact of a cable from production to recycling. Our customers were increasingly concerned with their ecological footprint and worried about the possible penetration of lead into the water table when lead-sheathed cables were buried. Drawing on our expertise in metals, insulation materials and extrusion we decided to extrude the multilayer composition in a single step, using the middle HDPE layer as a powerful “glue” to promote adhesion that makes them almost indestructible.

 

Complementary products

Polymers are 40% lighter than lead, which means longer lengths, fewer splices, and lower transportation costs. It is also 10-25% less expensive. Lead-sheathed cables remain an important part of our petrochemical portfolio, while HYPRON® opens new opportunities.
