Installation of Fenno-Skan 2 has started
Grimsås 2011-06-28 – Early on the morning of June 21, the work began to install the 200 kilometres-long submarine cable that will allow increased electricity supply between Sweden and Finland.
Svenska Kraftnät and Finnish Fingrid are reinforcing, in a joint project, the existing HVDC submarine power link between Sweden and Finland, with an additional cable, Fenno-Skan 2. The new link will have the same route as the existing cable, between Dannebo in Sweden, and Rauma in Finland. Nexans was 2008 awarded the turnkey contract worth approximately 1.4 billion SEK for the production and laying of submarine cable, a 500 kV HVDC cable with a capacity of 800 megawatts. The 200 km-long submarine cable link has been manufactured in two lengths at Nexans' production facility in Halden, Norway. The installation is carried out by Nexans own cable laying ship – the C/S Nexans Skagerrak.
On June 21st the work began to lay the first 100 kilometers. Early in the morning the process to fleet the 15 centimeters thick submarine cable from the C / S Nexans Skagerrak into Dannebo beach began to connect the cable to the overhead line which has been completed between Dannebo and Finnböle. On completion the installation continues at sea halfway across the Baltic Sea to Finland, where the two cable parts in about a month will be jointed after a similar process and installation from the Finnish coast.
With the new HVDC link between Sweden and Finland, power transmission capacity between the two countries will increase by 40 percent. The project means that the Nordic electricity market improves. The connection will also reduce losses in the Nordic grid and improve power system security. Fenno-Skan 2 is expected to be in operational in late 2011.
