Nexans contributes to the security of Sweden’s biggest

Nexans will supply signalling and power cables for Sweden’s first European Rail Traffic Management System to be installed on the new Bothnia Line

2007-04-04 – Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has received a 1.2 million Euro order from Bombardier Transportation to supply the trackside signalling and power cables for Sweden’s first European Rail Traffic Management System* (ERTMS), to be installed on the new Bothnia Line along the country’s northern coastline. Bombardier has been awarded the contract to provide the ERTMS system (level 2) for this new line by Bothniabanan AB, the company commissioned by the Swedish Government to build the Bothnia Line. The ERTMS signalling system is being installed to meet the requirements for the highest levels of security and traffic capacity on the line.

Nexans will supply Bombardier with approximately 350 km of fibre optic and copper cables that will provide the communications and low voltage power supply connections for the various trackside signalling and control elements of the Bothnia Line’s ERTMS. All cables are halogen free flame retardant types - particularly important because the line has a large number of tunnels.

The cables will be produced at Nexans' production site in Grimsås in Sweden and are scheduled for delivery in 2007 and 2008.

The Bothnia Line: 190 km with 140 bridges and 25 km of tunnels
The Bothnia Line is Sweden’s biggest railway project for many years. Due for completion in 2010, it is a 190 km long single-track railway with 140 bridges and 25 km of tunnels along Sweden's northern coastline. The trains on the line will operate at speeds up 250 km/h which will cut passenger journey times by up to 50 per cent.

Nexans has previously delivered cables to Bombardier for ERTMS systems in several other countries in Europe and Asia.

– Nexans' track record in railway cable contracts around the world convinced us that they had the quality and capability to provide the cables for the Bothnia Line ERTMS”, said Dorota Bacztek, Purchasing Manager for Rail Control Solutions at Bombardier Transportation.

– Railway infrastructure is a priority market segment for Nexans and we are able to provide international expertise by working in close relationship with local suppliers, says Yvon Raak, Nexans' Executive Vice President Europe Area.
– We are very pleased to be supplying the cables for Sweden’s first ERTMS system. It is an important reference that should help us to win further orders in the Nordic region.

(*)ERTMS is a new signalling and management system for Europe, enabling interoperability throughout the European Rail Network. More information about ERTMS is available at www.ertms.com.
