Ecological Sustainability at Nexans

Girl in the woods

We all need to help each other to slow climate change - and we need to use the planet's resources in a wiser way. If we want to reach UN's global goals then sustainable electrification is necessay. Therefore, we focus on two in particular areas: Reduced CO² emissions and Resource-smart production and development.

Our objectives for Ecological Sustainability

95%

WASTE RECYCLING. 95 % of all production waste to be recycled by 2025.

2024

at least 80 % of our products are to be third-party verified with life cycle documentation, also called EPD or PEP.

10%

We are reducing our products CO2e-impact by 10 % up to 2025.

2050

Nexans Group is committed to Net-Zero emissions according to SBTi*. Locally we aim to remove all emissions by 2026**.

95%

At least 95 % of what we sell in the Nordic region to be locally produced by 2025.

*Scope 1, 2 and 3, validated by The Science Based Target Initiatives. Baseline 2019 (unless otherwise stated).
** Scope 1 and 2, SBTi.

Reduced CO2 emissions

We have a concrete plan on how to reduce point emissions inside our gates up until 2026* so that we at Nexans Nordics are able to contribute to carbon dioxide neutrality.

We use a digital tool for planning and following-up CO²emissions. Through our investment in Industry 4.0 – where we measure energy consumption and the material consumption of our production lines in real time – additional awareness is created that can contribute to reduced CO² emissions.

Outside the gates (scope 3 and 4), we – among other things – work with:

Resource smart production and development

On July 28, 2022 overshooting day occurred – the day each year when the world begins to borrow from future generations' resources. We use our five Rs to increase our awareness and to contribute to a circular economy and healthier resource management.

  • REFUSE
    Supplier checks & prohibited substances
Proactive approach, thorough follow-up of REACh, RoHS and conflict minerals. At least 98 % of our total purchases are covered by signed CSR documents.

  • REDUCE
Reduced quantities of material and scrap
Reducing the amount of material, where the electricity standard allows it. In 2022, for example, a new EQLQ Control with less plastic was launched.

  • RECYCLE
    Recycling to a greater degree
Concrete activities for increased degree of recycling and proportion of recycled material in our cables, packaging and drums.

  • REUSE
    Reuse when possible

    Repairing and recycling cable
drums before they are chipped and burned in the wood chip boiler to
    heat our premises.

  • RENEW
    Investment in sustainable development

    Innovations that support and
accelerate energy transition and sustainable electrification.

What we have done so far

  • Wooden chip burners
Chips from cable drums and used pallets heat our premises instead of the old oil boiler.

  • Lifemark
Content marking embossed on the outside of the cable shows what it contains and makes it easier when it's time for recycling.

  • Charging points for cars
At the production facility in Grimsås, there are 54 charging points for electric cars, which can also be used by Grimsås residents.

  • Electric trucks
We are gradually replacing our fork lifts with electric powered ones (we also have AGVs), the fork lifts that are not yet powered by electricity are powered by the biofuel HVO100.

  • Fossil-free energy sources
At the production facility in Grimsås, we exclusively use electricity from fossil-free energy sources such as wind and water.
