Guide: Which CAT should you choose? (No, not the one with whiskers.)

What does CAT mean in network cables?

CAT stands for Category – not cat, unfortunately (as much as we wish it did). A CAT cable is a network cable that connects your devices to the internet. And yes, the higher the number, the better the performance. Higher number = faster and stronger.

So, which network cable should you pick?

CAT 5e – the cat that still purrs

  Speed: Up to 1 Gbit/s / 100MHz

  Range: Up to 100 meters

Best for: Your grandma’s casual browsing – with a few future-proof years built in.

CAT 6 – performance for modern homes

  Speed: Up to 10 Gbit/s (up to 55 meters) / 250MHz

Bonus: Better twisting = more stable signal

Best for: When you want something that works today and tomorrow.

CAT 6a – for the long-haul thinker

  Speed: 10 Gbit/s across 100 meters / 500MHz

Extra shielding: Less interference, more stability

Best for: Got a big house, lots of devices, or just love being a step ahead? CAT 6a is your new best friend.

CAT 7a – overkill? Nah, just seriously awesome

• Speed: Up to 40 Gbit/s / 1250–1600MHz

• Heavily shielded: Keeps out interference from microwaves… and Martians

• Best for: When you want to casually drop “I’m running CAT 7a” at the next dinner party. Or when only the best (and something no other supplier offers) will do.

Here’s where the whiskers come in: We’re the only ones in the world – yes, the world – to offer an approved modular jack for CAT 7a. That’s not just top-tier tech. That’s an installation that purrs.

Shielded or unshielded cable?

Shielded cable (STP) offers better protection against interference – great for areas with lots of electronics. Unshielded cable (UTP) is easier to handle and perfectly fine for most homes.

They say cats have nine lives – we say that’s not enough.

We offer certification for installations using our LAN range. That doesn’t just mean everything’s wired up correctly and working as it should – it also means a 25-year warranty!

“ Use our LAN products and certify your installation – and your cat will live for 25 years. ”

So... which cat… sorry, CAT – should you go for?

CAT 6a is like an electric bike: comfy and fast. CAT 7a? That’s the e-bike with extra battery and suspension – longer range, quicker arrival, future-ready

And hey... if what you really want is something fluffy, soft and with a mind of its own?
Then don’t get a CAT cable. Get a cat.
Meow for now!
